Fire crews were called to the student accommodation just before 3:30am after an automatic fire alarm and reports of smoke from a kitchen area. Residents were evacuated while firefighters investigated the incident.

The fire is understood to have involved a toaster in a students' kitchen, and was quickly brought under control before it could spread to other parts of the building. There were no reports of serious injuries, although the property was ventilated to remove smoke before residents were allowed to return.

Staff at the accommodation worked with emergency services to ensure those affected were accounted for and provided with information while the incident was dealt with.

An investigation into the exact cause of the fire would be expected as part of normal procedure, and residents may be reminded of the importance of not leaving cooking appliances unattended.

The incident caused temporary disruption during the early morning, but emergency crews completed their work and the scene was made safe just after 4am.
